There were plenty of rumours that she was going to focus on the Breeders’ Cup Classic, what looks to be (on paper, anyway) a much tougher race for her. She has stepped up to face males before, running ninth in the Dubai World Cup earlier this year during the Meydan meeting.
Royal Delta has shipped to Santa Anita for the first time and it will be interesting to see how she acclimatizes herself to the actual ground there. She ran riot in the Grade 1 Beldame Stakes at Belmont Park a few weeks ago and hasn’t posted a speed figure outside of the 100’s in her past five races - and that was a 99 in the Sabin Stakes in a prep at Gulfstream Park.
The bookmakers continue to list her as the distinct favourite for this one and they’ve got her trading around 9/4 with William Hill.
The chief rival at this point looks to be Awesome Feather, who trades in the neighbourhood of around 4/1 with most major bookmakers. You’ll have to see this filly to believe her, she is undefeated in her ten career starts and has a very credible series of works leading up to this race. She will also be making her Santa Anita debut here and it should be noted that many of her earlier victories came in much easier races at Calder in Florida.
Godolphin’s Questing has been seen as the main challenger to Royal Delta’s claims during the build-up to this race but she was bested by My Miss Aurelia once the two actually faced off against each other. That certainly switched up everybody’s impression of how she was going to perform once she got on the big stage and it looks like many have backed off of her. A fact indicated by her price drifting out towards 4/1 in the morning line. She has performed admirably during the past few races after switching over from some of the higher calibre English tracks.
Yes, she was only bested by a head on the day but she’s going to have plenty working against her for this one. She has retained the service of Irad Ortiz Jr. and some will count that as a bit of a stroke against her because he doesn’t boast much experience at Santa Anita itself.
Class Included likely takes the most prominent step up in grade for this race as she ships down from Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver, Canada. Top nor-Cal jock Russell Baze is booked for the trip and she’ll be running against all of the odds here. UK books have her floating as high as 33/1, which is considerable in a slim field like this one.
