- By A.J. Ryder on September 23, 2013 18:22 GMTOne of the most anticipated handicaps of the flat season is nearly here and there is still a massive field of entries for the Betfred Cambridgeshire, which kicks off this Saturday at Newmarket. The race will anchor one of the best days of racing we’ve seen in a while as things begin to heat-up as Champions Day gets closer and closer.

There are some great opportunities in the ante post market if you’re willing to make the jump right now but you’re going to have to decipher one of the deepest fields you’re likely to be faced with over the course of the racing season.
Expect a few withdrawals as we get closer to the next declaration stage, especially from some of the shorter-odds contenders who may decide to be pointed elsewhere. There is plenty to like about a few of the more recognizable runners here.
The interestingly-named Top Notch Tonto is currently listed as the betting favourite with most major books and you’ll find him trading around 9/1 - generally the only contender listed at a single-digit price in this 103-strong early field.
Top Notch Tonto has been campaigned fairly extensively this season and this will be his first step up to the Heritage Handicap circuit after capturing a Group 3 at Haydock a few weeks back with Dale Swift in the irons. It took Top Notch Tonto a few races to really find form but he really made the breakthrough in late July when caprtuing a Class 3 Handicap at Newmarket when sent off as the 9/4 favourite. Following that race, he took a step up to Class 2 and was beaten a short head.
He ran his best race ever last time out and you always have to watch out for a bounce after pulling off a big victory like that. The question is whether he is ready to take the big step up to this circuit and face off against seasoned handicappers - a big ask for a three-year-old.
