Cheltenham Festival Each-Way Betting Preview Pt 1

The each-way bet is one of the most reliable wagers in all of punting and the Cheltenham Festival is one of the best places to tuck into a few hefty e/w’s because you’re looking at big odds in nearly every single race. As always, getting things right involves making a proper selection but also getting value for money. Far too often, a new punter will make an each-way bet on a very short odds horse around 4/1 or 5/1 - that’s not how you want to play an each-way wager.

Generally, a proper each-way bet is double digits with many punters considering 16/1 to be where they start playing serious each-way selections. Some punters will go down to 12/1 and others will even take a stab at high single digits but the true value of the bet shines through once you get into 16s.

We’ve picked out a few quality each-way bets for you if you’re looking for a bit of Cheltenham value and don’t really know where to start.

The Queen Mother Champion Chase has been one of the most talked-about races of the past week or so, mostly because of the withdrawal of Sprinter Sacre - the highest-rated jumps horse in the UK & Ireland. Now that things have been left to the best of the rest, Sire De Grugy has popped up at the top of the market - extremely overlaid at 5/4 with several major bookmakers.

That’s far too short even though he looks to be a talented horse. We think this one is much more wide open and we are tempted to side with an old hand who is coming back to get one over the younger pretenders to his throne. Sizing Europe, winner of this race previously, has been a tough horse to back at times but always gives you his all at Cheltenham and we reckon he’s a tidy option at 14/1 e/w if you can get on him now.
