Cheltenham Festival Each-Way Betting Preview Pt 2
- By A.J. Ryder on February 27, 2014 17:52 GMTIt will be interesting to see what his price does on the day, but we firmly expect him to put in a good pre-race appearance so that might see his odds drop considerably as we get closer to the off. Watch out for a few late withdrawals here as well as there are several solid contenders who still boast entries for other contests. With non-runner no-bet being offered by many UK-based books its worth getting on now just to lock in good prices on the horses you know aren’t going anywhere else.
He’ll be in sharper form in the spring, he always is, and you can throw out that last race after Christmas as the ground didn’t really suit him and he didn’t look up for the trip, it being his third contest of the season already. He does best when given a lengthy period between races and he’s been off since then. Expect him to kick on nicely here and produce a vintage Cheltenham performance.
Next up we’ve got Double Ross in the Byrne Group Plate and, while it may not be one of the particularly flashy events of Cheltenham, it is always worth watching and can be the type of race that suits this accomplished but very much under-the-radar type of jumper. Double Ross is seldom seen in the big races but his connections tend to place him quite well and he is always there or thereabouts. He is especially good to back because when he wins, he tends to hit at a pretty solid price and generally always gets up for the placing.
You have to go back to Haydock last May to find a spot where Double Ross finished off the board and he’s captured a pair of Grade 3 handicap chases after graduating off the novice circuit at first time of asking this year at Perth.
He is a bit of a course specialist with his last three contests all coming at Cheltenham and he just lost out to Wishfull Thinking last time to lose by just under two lengths. It was a solid run though and he will still be looking good going forward off a seven week freshening for this one.
