Top Australian rider Chad Schofield has the ride on the other 9/2 second-choice in Lankan Rupee who has only finished out side of the top two in a single race - his first - when he took a shot at the Coolmore Stud Stakes on his debut. Not many really make their first appearance in a Group 1 but this horse has defied convention for some time and has put together a really nice volume of work with a number of Group 1 victories.
Since coming back to the track in early September it took him two tough beats (each by a short head) before he got back to winning ways at Moonnee Valley in late October when he was able to get the better of Angelic Light by a short head in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes. He delivered at a tidy price that day of around 3/1 but he was sent off extremely short in the races prior to that.
He is most famous for winning the TJ Smith Stakes at Royal Randwick back in April and if he can conjure up another performance like that one then he’s going to be very difficult to catch.
Expect Lankan Ruby to go straight to the front and put the afterburners on for the entire race. It will be interesting to see if it actually comes down to him and Slade Power towards the end and whether the English counterpart will be able to find that additional gear and be able to mount his trademark late flourish.
It also must be said that, at a 9/2 price, Lankan Rupee is likely to have fewer question marks over top of him.
