- By A.J. Ryder on March 26, 2014 20:25 GMTThe richest individual day of thoroughbred racing is nearly upon us as the 2014 Dubai World Cup is finally set to run this Saturday at fabulous Meydan racecourse in the United Arab Emirates. While the $10,000,000 purse for the feature is definitely lighting up plenty of eyes across the globe, it’s easy to forget that there are a pile of very interesting contests unfolding on the undercard.

There is a lot to like about some of these races and we’ll be taking a look at the bigger ones here and trying to get a gauge on how things are expected to shape up.
The Godolphin Mile is the first contest of the day and it’s a Group 2 encounter going 1m (obviously) over the Tapeta surface. Shuruq and Soft Falling Rain are both trading as the 7/2 betting favourites at the moment with Variety Club also looming as an interesting 5/1 shot and rounding out the single-digit contenders.
This race might very well be a good one to push on a longer-odds selection and we like the look of Dubai veteran Haatheq in an each-way bet. He is priced around 20/1 with most major bookmakers right now and have every chance to hit the board if the race is run to his liking.
Following that we have the Dubai Gold Cup, which is a 2m contest on the grass that will see the usual line-up of staying superstars having a go at one another here. Godolphin’s Cavalryman is the real one to watch here and the specialist contender has won races like this before and there are no questions about his ability to get the distance.
With races this long, there are a lot of different variables that can affect the overall outcome. It looks like Cavalryman will definitely go off as the favourite with a price hovering around 11/4 at the moment and Simenon looking the most likely challenger at a 6/1 listing. Joshua Tree is in the mix here at 13/2 alongside Ernest Hemingway.
It’s also worth keeping your eyes on Sheikhzayedroad at a 16/1 price tag.
