Epsom Derby Betting Preview

After Dawn Approach captured the 2013 2000 Guineas on Saturday, we saw the gauntlet truly thrown down for the widely-anticipated Epsom Derby on June 1st. After seeing a number of other contenders trading as the favourites in the ante post market over the past few months, Dawn Approach has firmly stamped it as his own with the Godolphin runner available at a 7/4 listing.

Several bookmakers offer up Dawn Approach at 13/8 and that price is likely to drop unless any complications emerge after the scintillating five length victory at Newmarket on Saturday.
Undefeated now in seven starts and with a treble of Group 1’s under his belt - including an English Classic - he has certainly been a shining light for Godolphin after the worst few weeks in their history.
Battle of Marengo looks to be the big challenger at this point with bookmakers trimming him into 4/1 after Toronado failed to emerge as the contender they truly expected him to be. The Coolmore charge was last seen capturing the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown in mid-April and that was a solid performance considering it was his seasonal debut. Sent off at 8/13, he failed to disappoint.
Telescope is a well-respected maiden winner who has been pointed at the Derby for quite some time and will be kicking off his season with an effort here. Sired by Galileo, out of a Darshaan mare, he has the 12f pedigree and should get the trip with ease. Expect to see Richard Hughes in the irons here.
Mars finished sixth in the Guineas and will be looking to pick it up with the added distance. He had only been out once in his career - a maiden score at Dundalk but he had always been something of a wiseguy horse who looked like he might do something incredible but also looked capable of a sputtering effort - which is more or less what he produced.
He’s priced anywhere from 12/1 to 8/1 right now and looks like he will have a lot to learn as he goes forward.
