The days card is anchored by the widely-anticipated Sussex Stakes and there are plenty of reasons to expect a seriously stand-out performance from the top contenders in that major Group 1 contest over the one mile distance.

The opening race is a 2m5f handicap with twenty different runners and it’s going to be a pretty tricky scenario to gauge the outright winner here. William of Orange lines up for Sir Mark Prescott and he’s been knocking on the door for a while now but still hasn’t made the breakthrough yet this season. He’s trading at a 4/1 margin right now while Air Squadron, undefeated on the year, looms as the main spoiler with a 7/1 price tag.
He hasn’t been running in the greatest of races and this is a big step up for him but those wins were respectable ones and the contests the favourite was running in and losing previously aren’t really a whole heck of a lot better.
The second race of the day is the Group 3 Gordon Stakes with a 1m4f distance to be tackled by a tricky group of 10. Highland Reel, a disappointment in the past three efforts looms as the betting favourite here with a very short 7/4 price tag after dropping down from a fifth place finish in the Irish Derby. Should he run to his second place effort at Chantilly recently then he’s got as good a chance as any and that’s likely what the punters are banking on with the relative drop in class.
Medrano is your second choice and looks a contender with a 7/2 price tag while Scottish has seen some steam recently and was taken into 8/1 from 10/1 by the bookmakers after the money came. He was notable for finishing second at Royal Ascot in the King George V Stakes, which is a Class 2 handicap. Prior to that he broke his maiden at Newbury on the third time of asking and looks an interesting contender going forward.
