While it may only be a Grade 3 contest, there is still plenty of money up for grabs in this very important Grand National Trial at Haydock tomorrow afternoon. This race is going to be a proper test of many of these geldings with a full 3m4f to be navigated over ground that is expected to be heavy.

It’s going to be a big statement for whoever hits the line here first and, having had a look at the pre-race prices, there is going to be some very interesting movement and that could likely tell the tale of just how this one is actually going to shape up.
There is a lot to like about this race and there are some very high-quality runners here set to challenge.
Teaforthree has been an interesting sort for quite some time and the son of Oscar put in a very good shift at Chepstow last time out to finish second by a relatively slim margin in the Welsh National. You probably remember him as the winner of the Amateur Riders Chase at last year’s Cheltenham Festival. He had taken a big step up in quality there and appears to be holding his own now that he is being campaigned at a much higher level.
He gets Nick Schofield in the irons for the first time and it will be interesting to see how switching away from AP McCoy effects both his price and his ability to hit the line first. The jockey decision doesn’t seem to be fazing punters at all though, as he trades as the 11/2 second favourite.
Monbeg Dude was actually the one who got the better of Teaforthree on January 5 at Chepstow and he’s had a pretty tidy season if you disregard him unseating his rider on his seasonal debut at Cheltenham. He followed that up over course and distance to take the Grade 3 Henrietta Knight Handicap Chase - his biggest ever score. He then captured a much larger purse in the subsequent Chepstow effort. He looks to be able to hang tough with any of this lot if he can replicate either of those performances.
