Long Run Considered Key Grand National Contender PT 1

As we get closer and closer to the business end of the Jumps Racing season - there is some real excitement about Cheltenham but we all know that the big show at Chelters means that the National is right around the corner and it’s not just about winning the office sweepstakes - it’s about cashing in a big ante post bet and seeing your selection storm home after the lengthy 4m3f chase over exaggerated obstacles.

It now appears that former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Long Run will be pointed towards the National and his faltering effort in the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day will likely mean his connections think he’s got what it takes to win the National.

Long Run is considered to be anywhere from 20/1 to 25/1 depending on whom you’re betting with and, having unseated his rider last time, you have to wonder whether he is a genuine favourite for this one and whether he really can tackle the extreme distance and testing fences that he’ll find on the National course at Aintree in April.

There aren’t a huge amount of genuine contenders for this race who come in with a huge amount of form but that’s usually how the National works as it tends to be a bit of a lottery - built as much on outright quality and staying ability as it has to do with luck and race shape.

The other contenders behind Long Run look rather interesting and there are plenty of seasoned National campaigners who are set to have another kick at the richest jumps race in Britain. You’ll find the likes of Seabass trading anywhere from 25/1 to 33/1 while Big Fella Thanks remains in the mix with a few bookmakers posting him at around 66/1.
