You know the flat season is nearly upon us when you start seeing Newmarket fixtures popping up in midweek with plenty of interesting races set to unfold. Wednesday’s card is no different. There are more than a few solid races on offer including a listed contest and a Group 3 encounter for fillies. There are also some quality prices on offer and you expect that the meeting will take considerable volume in tandem with the Cheltenham fixture on Channel 4.

There is a full nine race card on offer at Newmarket and there are plenty of interesting wagering opportunities unfolding throughout – and much of it remains high class racing of the Class 2 and Class 1 variety.
The first contest is a 7f maiden and there isn’t a huge amount of form to work with but plenty of interesting trainers and yards are represented. Roger Varian has a pair in this one and in-form Andrew Balding also boasts a contender who has a place under his belt on the all weather this season.
The one to watch appears to be John Gosden’s charge Provident Spirit who finished second last time out at Doncaster in a relatively deep 13-strong maiden contest.
The second race of the day is a 5f dash for another group of lightly-raced three-year-olds – many of them making their debuts. Both Flyball and Harry Hurricane appear to catch the eye based on their previous efforts but the ominous sign of Godolphin silks on a debut contender make things especially interesting. Though Mickael Barzalona has not been especially on fire this season, they may very well be able to strike with debutante Portamento – who is trained by Charlie Appleby and is by Sharmadal out of an Unbridled’s Song mare.
The Tattersall’s Million Stakes is one of the key features of the day and there are several really interesting runners in this one – chief among them is Crowdmania – another son of Shamardal who has rattled off four victories in succession and comes into the race looking especially sharp. He is drawn well for the effort and looks set to move forward from a ratings standpoint.
