Newmarket Saturday Betting Preview PT 2
- By A.J. Ryder on July 10, 2015 20:20 GMTThe angle here is that he’s cutting back in distance from the 1m1f he raced at last time and, since he’s an Indian Charlie, he’s unlikely to really do that well past 8 panels so the return to 1m is likely the right thing for him at exactly the correct time.

The second race of the day is the Group 2 Superlative Stakes and the field of nine looks like virtually anybody can win in this 2yo contest going 7f. Air Vice Marshall lines up for Aidan O’Brien and the War Front colt looked really good when getting off the mark at Gowran Park a couple of weeks ago. Prior to that he had finished a decent third at the Curragh agains a field of 11.
In that last race at Gowran Park, he was sent out of the gates at a slim 1/4 price tag and he did everything right that day so some might say there isn’t much reason to go against him unless you are price shopping.
There are a few in here with higher ratings though, if you’re looking to play this one by the numbers and you’ll find the likes of Beaverbrook - by Cape Cross out of a Kingmambo mare - he’s been running in better races than this one and looks to be a real there-or-thereabouts type. He has proven in the past that he can hit the board in difficult races and he looms large to make something happen here.
The bookmakers have him floating at a 5/1 margin right now and that might make him an interesting each-way bet since they’ll be paying 3 places.
Third race on the card at Newmarket on Saturday is the Bunbury Cup, which is another race in the Heritage Handicap series and we’ve got a big field of 20 going 7f and there are a number of the usual suspects showing up in this one including the likes of Boomshackerlacker, Lulu The Zulu and Chil The Kite. Judging from the early betting, it appears as though Luca Cumani’s Ayaar is the choice right now for punters and the son of Rock of Gibraltar gets Frankie Dettori as usual in this one.
That pair combined back in mid-April to grab a similar contest at Newbury and they’ll be looking to channel the same sort of thing this time around. Expect him to be kept in touch while racing in midfield. He has a course and distance win here and that came over Good to Firm ground as well so he is definitely in the mix here for this one with a price of about 6/1 as the favourite.
