Newmarket Saturday Betting Preview PT 4

Muhaarar took the Coronation Cup at Royal Ascot and was a bit of a surprise coming home at 10/1 there but it was an emphatic win by nearly four lengths. With a similar sort of race likely to emerge here - he may prove that the last effort was not a flash in the pan performance.

One of the best sprinters of the recent era, Sole Power, is set to contest this one as well but the bookmakers and the betting public are lukewarm on his chances - pricing him at about 16/1 for the outright victory. Globetrotting son of Dutch Art, Caspar Netscher is also in the mix here and could be an interesting outside contender for David Simcock - he trades at a 40/1 margin.

Following the July Cup, we have a Class 4 maiden fillies contest and there are a lot of unlaced horses in this one so it really could be anybody’s guess. Some top yards are represented here but Ballydoyle is likely to take a good portion of the betting money as she runs for her namesake yard. Her rating of 111 towers over the rest of the field and she was only beaten a short head last time out at Ascot by Suits You in the listed Chesham Stakes.

Godolphin’s City Chic could prove popular here too as she is a Street Cry out of a Dixieland Band mare and could be very dangerous going first time out here for Charlie Appleby.

The 4:55 is a Class 2 nursery handicap for two-year-olds and Roger Varian’s Majdool looks to be the one to beat according to the punters here and he enters off a rather hefty victory at Wolverhampton when he took a Class 5 maiden contest by a full six lengths when sent off at 4/7. Spongy could be another winner for Zoffany and he enters the race off a Class 4 maiden score at Leicester for Richard Hannon.

The nightcap race at 5:30 is a 1m4f Class 3 handicap and there are only seven runners in this one. Not a huge amount of recent form between many here so the answer might be to opt with Liberty Red, who can be backed as the 7/2 second choice behind Maxwell - he enters off a recent victory at Pontefract and switches to Paul Hanagan first time.
