OLBG Mares Hurdle Betting Preview Pt 3

She is definitely a proper each-way selection and, though this is a significant step up in quality, you have to respect that this may just be a horse who knows how to find the line. It’s not often you get a chance to back a horse who is 5/5 in rules races at a price as high as 16/1.

Glens Melody stands as a significant outside shot who has been racking up a series of wins on the Class 1 circuit and improving each time. She has won a pair of listed contests at Warwick to serve as her Cheltenham prep and she looks a key contender for Willy Mullins here. The bookmakers are seemingly undecided on where, exactly, she’s going to wind up but you do have to respect the fact that she’s not finished outside of the top 3 at any point in her career.

The real question mark though is the fact that her worst career performance was at Cheltenham last year when she was 30 lengths off the pace despite going off as the betting favourite in the Grade 2 Osbourne House Relkeel Hurdle. She also finished second to Annie Power in a Grade 1 at Fairyhouse last season but was still beaten twelve lengths.

You get the feeling that Glens Melody isn’t exactly a genuine stand-out selection or even much of an each-way tip but the place money here could seem sharp after things have unfolded as she looks as though she can hang tough with this type of company and still comes into the race with plenty of form.

Other notables in here include the likes of Swing Bowler anywhere from 12/1 to 16/1 while Highland Retreat comes in with a good series of wins in a handicap, a listed and a grade 2 hurdle this year. Unraced at Cheltenham, though, that will certainly explain why she’s 20/1 despite the recent form.

With Annie Power now looking to make a big statement for the mares and tackle Big Buck’s next time out, it’s going to be another fascinating iteration of the Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham.
