Racing Post Trophy Betting Preview PT 2

In recent years we have had smaller fields in this race and that’s usually translated into significant odds-on favourites to take the contest but this year we have a bit of a shoot-out developing between Foundation and O’Brien’s charge Deauville. Trading at just a shade lower than Foundation at a 5/2 margin, Deauville has loomed as the pick of the others and was just three-quarters of a length behind Foundation in his only career loss so far.

The talented son of Galileo is out of the Danehill mare Walklikeanegyptian and has a Group 3 score in Ireland under his belt, having taken the Japanese Racing Association Tyros Stakes when sent off at a 9/2 margin.

Another O’Brien charge, Johannes Vermeer, is attempting to make a statement here after being beaten into fourth in the Jean-Luc Legardere (Grand Criterium) at Longchamp two weeks ago. He was sent off as the betting choice with a 2/1 price tag and was unable to deliver. Prior to that he had taken the Group 3 Willis Champions Juvenile Stakes at Leopardstown.

Punters will find Johannes Vermeer trading anywhere from a 4/1 margin all the way up to a 6/1 listing.

Tony Curtis looms as another interesting contender here with a progressive-looking pedigree showing that maybe we haven’t quite seen the finished product yet. He was recently seen scoring at Salisbury in a listed contest by a decent margin when sent off at a 5/6 price tag. The Richard Hannon-trained son of Rock of Gibraltar could make a statement here and is taking action from the punters but it will be interesting to see how his odds fluctuate with some books going as high as a decent 10/1 margin on him right now.

Other notables include the Fastnet Rock colt Shogun, who is still just a maiden winner but has run in some decent races, trading at anywhere from 7/1 to 14/1. Mengli Khan is trading at a relatively large price and the son of Lope De Vega looks like he could make a statement here and get a [placing based off his maiden score at Nottinham a few weeks ago Look for him at 14/1.
