Tattersall’s Irish 2000 Guineas Preview Pt 1

A supremely talented group of three-year-old thoroughbreds will be contending the widely-anticipated Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh this Saturday and the massive field boasts some of the most exciting superstars of their generation. Kingman comes into the race as a very serious odds-on favourite to get the better of this strong field and you can assume that the Juddmonte connections will be hoping it doesn’t pan out like last time when he was just bested by half a length by Night Of Thunder.

Despite all of the hype and attention focused on the son of Invicible Spirit right now, he really does deserve a lot of the attention despite only being a multiple Group 3 winner. His sole effort at Group 1 level was in the 2000 Guineas and Night of Thunder (whom Kingman had vanquished in his previous race at Newbury on his seasonal debut) got the better of him on the day after blowing up the toteboard with a strong performance to secure the first English classic.

While Kingman has jumped out to a solid start in the ante post market and long ago established himself as the clear betting favourite, the real race seems to be on for the second place spot with some of Britain and Ireland’s most talented contenders lining up for that position in the ante post market.

War Command was widely-tipped to be one of the most dominant runners of his entire generation and his Guineas performance was absolutely gash. The Dewhurst winner, who for quite some time traded as the betting favourite for the 2000 Guineas ante post market, saw himself unable to quicken at the business end of the race finishing a tame ninth from fourteen, though he was only about five lengths or so off of the pace.

The question really remains whether he has the ability to carry on that quality two-year-old form into his third year or whether his seasonal debut was just that - a seasonal debut. Aidan O’Brien may have made a mistake in not giving him a prep race but that’s likely the reason why he trading at a 6/1 price tag at the present time.
