Tattersall’s Irish 2000 Guineas Preview Pt 2
- By A.J. Ryder on May 21, 2014 20:36 GMTRichard Hannon’s chestnut son of Compton Place, Shifting Power, looks like a very interesting contender and remains only lightly-raced with four previous efforts - two of which have come this year. He put in a quality run in the 2000 Guineas to finish fourth and outrun his 50/1 odds by a very serious margin. Prior to that he had only won a listed handicap but beat some tidy horses while doing it. He did have Ryan Moore in the irons that day and switched to Frankie Dettori for the Guineas effort.

Dermot Weld will be saddling up Mustajeeb for Sheikh Hamdan and they will be looking at his recent Group 3 score at Leopardstown as the key race here. He is trading at an 11/2 price tag right and is considered to be just the slim second favourite for this prestigious race. It’s also worth noting that he finished second to War Command in a Group 2 last year at the Curragh so he has some decent form over the track and showed that he can cope with Group 1 winners and still acquit himself in a reasonable manner.
The odds then take a considerable jump to the 16/1 range as Alkasser and Big Time are both trading at competitive prices and looking like they might make things very interesting for the each way punters. Of the two, Al Kasser looks to be the one to really keep your eye on with two victories in his three previous career races. While his last victory was only a listed contest he really outran his odds and looks like he could definitely emerge to pick up the pieces here. He was unraced at two and that’s an interesting variable in the grand scheme of things.
The other one to watch out for here who really could spring a surprise looks to be Johann Strauss who had to drop onto the all weather to actually get his first win of the season. He was a horse with a lot of hype around him last year when he managed to finish second in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster. Though he was dropped down to a mere 5k race last time you assume that the 5+ length performance will have done wonders for his confidence.
Look for Johann Strauss at a very interesting 28/1, making him a solid each-way selection on any book paying 4 or 5 places.
