Bayern was originally thought of as more of a short race contender but trainer Bob Baffert has been able to get him to move forward significantly and he can now tackle the middle distances with ease as indicated by his absolutely smashing victory in the Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park back in mid-July.
Right now, punters will find him trading at a 15/8 price tag with his board price looking likely to go off significantly shorter than that as a number of folks will be piling on to him, particularly in the vertical wagers as the Pick 4’s and Pick 6’s will be boasting large bonuses on the day.
Bayern must conquer a select group of three-year-old contenders who are still hanging around from the Derby trail. The best-rated one appears to be Wicked Strong available at a 3/1 price tag and looking significantly improved with the addition of blinkers. He has been able to prove his ability in his last race and looks likely to be a real threat coming down the center of the track on Saturday.
Tonalist, the winner of the Belmont and the vanquisher of California Chrome’s Triple Crown hopes, is very much in the mix here as well though punters don’t seem quite as keen on him with his 7/2 price tag. He is likely to be a major factor in a lot of punters horizontal wagers but the fact remains that Belmont winners don’t often kick on to get the later races of the year unless your name is Drosselmeyer.
