William Hill Bonus and Tips for Newmarket Saturday Part 1

The July meeting is ready to get underway this week (even though it won't officially be July...) and the Saturday card at Newmarket plays host to some high quality thoroughbred racing action. The early going is said to be soft and we are still awaiting the final declaration stage so sorting through some deep cards is currently the order of the day.

Some high-quality runners will be on-track this Saturday. Expect a few sunny intervals in the build-up to Saturday so slightly firmer going shouldn't be completely unexpected.

The Group 3 Chipchase Stakes is the opener and we've got accomplished handicap company going 6f on the July course. 21 are currently entered for this one but expect a few to drop out between now and then. Eton Rifles will be looking to improve on his three efforts this year. He's still a bit higher up than he wants to be in the weights but will hopefully have improved.

Accomplished handicapper Our Jonathan will be lining up for this one and he just missed out by 1/4 of a length against listed company. That followed a winning score at Haydock when sent off as the 15/8 favourite in a conditions stakes contest. He is 6-3-3 from 23 efforts on the grass and 3-1-0 from 10 attempts at stakes level. He's beaten a few who will be lining up here and looks set to kick on with his third start off the freshening.

The second race of the day at Newmarket is another 6f dash, this time a Class 2 handicap. Powerful Presence is unbeaten this year and will look to make it four scores on the bounce. Something really looks to have clicked with the gelded son of Refuse To Bend during the off-season and he looks to have simply had too many races in the latter part of last year. He ran 3 times in June, 3 times in July, once in August and September and then two or three times each in October/November. It's hardly surprising that his form began to wilt away.

Cape Classic turns out for the William Haggas yard and will be enjoying his first race in about a month. He scored last time at Windsor when sent off as the 5/2 favourite in a relatively modest handicap.

Shropshire, a four-year-old son of Shamardal, is going in as the top weight and will likely see some backing from those who think he's found a softer field. He finished a notable 3rd in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes against Frankel last year.
