The 3:20 contest at Newmarket is the widely-anticipated John Smith's Northumberland Plate, a Heritage Handicap staying contest going 2m19y. There is something like 45 entries still in the mix for this race so expect a few very interesting swings in the wagering as we get closer to the off for this one. The Betchworth Kid returns for his third outing of the year for Alan King's yard and you can expect him to improve on his last outing when he finished third, seven lengths behind on a seasonal debut.

Ile De Re is getting a lot of attention during the build-up for this one and that's likely on the back of the grey's impressive performance in the Chester Cup. Sent off on the day at a 10/1 price, he turned back 15 other contenders to romp home by nearly two lengths. He gets a race that's about a furlong shorter but he has shown the ability to handle softer going. The accomplished hurdles runner will be looking for another big date on the flat this Saturday.
Deauville Flyer is another that could prove especially interesting and he already has Graham Gibbons booked for the ride. The pair have a solid track record when teaming up and Gibbons notably brought him home at 20/1 at Pontefract back in April.
The fourth contest kicks off at 3:55 and will see runners going 7f over the soft going. There is some pretty indifferent form to work with here and you may want to keep your eye on Spa's Dancer, who was a beatn favourite last time out at Folkestone.
Set for his fifth start of the season, he has only been outside of the top 2 on one occasion this year and that was a fourth-place finish at Sandown on his seasonal debut when carrying 11-4.
We've got a class 4 maiden set to go at 4:25 and the 5f distance shouldn't be too much for many of these high-quality maiden contenders. Tanghan will definitely take some money as the two-year-old son of Invincible Spirit mustered a second place finish from his first effort at York. Sent off on the day at 20/1, he will certainly go off at a shorter price this time. Richard Fahey looks to have selected a good spot for him and his breeding shows that he have no problem handling longer distances.
Opt Out has finished third on three occasions in a row and the son of Pivotal will be one to watch based on the jockey assignment that he gets. He's had three different jocks in all of his three efforts and seeing which one comes back might be the right move.
Cracking Choice is a son of Choisir and also finished second on his first time out. Look for him to kick on here and improve after his showing at Musselburgh.
