- By A.J. Ryder on July 26, 2013 15:42 GMTAmerica’s “Summer Derby” is set to unfold this Sunday on the Jersey Shore at Monmouth Park and there is a lot to like about this year’s iteration of the widely-anticipated contest despite a relatively short field as we get closer to the race itself.

Capping off a stellar 14 race card, the race sees Preakness winner Oxbow set to tangle with one-time Kentucky Derby favourite Verrazano, as well as the Derby runner-up Golden Soul - who surprised everybody with a late-running dash bringing him home behind Orb at a hefty 60/1.
With William Hill looking to make a big push stateside as they loosen up their online gaming laws, they are the title sponsor of the American race this time around. The nine furlong contest only boasts a line-up of 7 runners and there is a lot of question marks over top of how this one will sort itself out.
One of the most interesting aspects of the race is the late entry of Vyjack, who was expected to opt for the Jim Dandy but appears to prefer this race - and the absence of Belmont winner Palace Malice.
The first look should likely go to the pair of contenders who both boast at least one victory over the Monmouth surface. Verrazano was hurt slightly in the Kentucky Derby and was laid off for about five weeks before returning with a sensational score in the Grade 3 Pegasus Stakes that reaffirmed his position as one of the better colts of his generation.
