Only Five Challenging Oscar Whisky in Welsh Champion Hurdle

It's a slim field set to contest the Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las as the going rates at good to soft and we're set to go 2m.

Obviously, Oscar Whisky stands atop this field like a colossus and the bay son of Oscar put in a fantastic shift on his sole effort this season - a handicap hurdle at Cheltenham. He topped some very established contenders there including the likes of Celestial Halo and Karabak. Nicky Henderson's charge trades at low as 1/7 with some bookmakers and Barizan finished sixth in that particular race and he comes back for another kick at the can here. He's not won since a Grade 1 score in a race restricted to four year-olds at Punchestown last year.

From a ratings standpoint, Black Jack Blues holds some appeal and he was bested by Silviniaco Conti in his last effort back in November. He boasts a score at Ffos Las over good to firm at a 2m distance so he might be able to get up late and be a factor here. Those looking to beat Oscar Whisky will likely opt for this one and he trades as high as 16/1. He could also be a factor in the forecast markets.

Won In The Dark boasts the best average official ratings in this contest but he just hasn't been able to win in nearly a year although he has been running at Grade 1 level almost exclusively. He'll be poised to capitalize on any mistakes from Oscar Whisky but a sheer inability to find the line first will likely force punters into retreat.

Tarkari really needs to step it up if he's going to be in the mix here and his last effort was a falling one at Cheltenham back in November in the Grade 3 Greatwood Handicap Hurdle. He's priced as high as 40/1 but looks like he just has too much to do.
