2015 Belmont Stakes Betting Preview PT 2

Today saw a very interesting occurrence as two European books have taken the Triple Crown favourite into odds-on territory ahead of the race. There is some very interesting price discrepancies with some books listing him as high as 6/5 while others have him trading at a slim 4/5 margin. In the absence of bad news about his chances, you can expect Pharoah to continue to drop as many American punters actually expect him to be as short as 1/5 on the day of the actual race.

With a sloppy surface, you might see him drop even shorter, down into 1/9 territory if he really looks to have an advantage because of the conditions underfoot. Very few, if any, of the horses actually in the mix here have actually proven their ability to handle a sloppy surface and his ability to maintain his focus and glide over a messy track could wind up being the thing that genuinely makes him the Kingmaker.

His closest competition is expected to come from Frosted - a Godolphin horse that was bred by their Darley operation. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin and boasting a victory in the Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct, he was a fast-closing fourth in the Kentucky Derby after experiencing a very troubled trip. He is a horse that likely wanted to be closer to the pace that day but his ability to make moves at the exact right time was compromised and his jockey had to make due with the opportunities that he had available to him.

The connections are declaring that he is training well and looking great with several bookmakers seemingly keen to declare him as the key spoiler for the race with some actually taking him into a 4/1 margin while other leave him hovering at a 5/1 listing. It will be interesting to se what happens to his price but you can expect him to be slightly higher than 4/1 on the American tote markets that day.

Materiality is another big potential spoiler and the bookmakers have him priced just slightly higher than Frosted with prices tending to hover around the 6/1 margin with a few listing him at 11/2 and one or two listing him as high as 8/1. The son of Afleex Alex is trained by Todd Pletcher and earned his way into the Kentucky Derby by conquering the Besilu Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park.
