2015 Travers Stakes Betting Preview PT 1

Coming right on the heels of a scintillating victory for American-based super mare Beholder in the TVG Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar on Saturday, the current reigning Triple Crown Champion American Pharoah worked out over the exact same surface on Sunday morning before being confirmed by connections to ship to Saratoga Springs to contest this weekend’s Travers Stakes.

The race is commonly referred to as the summer derby and viewed as the de facto sign that the end is near for the annual meeting at the track colloquially known as “The Spa” in upstate New York a short drive from Albany.

With this year’s three-year-old division being dominated by the son of Pioneerof The Nile and his jockey Victor Espinoza, we have the prospect of him etching his name even further into the history books by triumphing in the Haskell Stakes by a big margin at Monmouth Park and then looking geared up to run just over a month later at Saratoga Springs.

His recent workouts over the Del Mar surface have had the hundreds of attendees who turn up just to watch him zip around the racetrack for a minute or two with Martin Garcia in the irons cooing and exclaiming surprise that he is working so well after a big race just a few weeks back and a tough cross-country ship.

Usually turned out alongside his stable pony Smokey, American Pharoah now faces the prospect of taking on older colts and geldings in his next race - and there is every chance he could come up against the electrifying mare who made a bold declaration on Saturday and stamped herself as the likely second best horse in America at the present time.
