The big action kicking off over timber this weekend is set to be the 2011 Betfair Chase, which should really serve as a recognition that the National Hunt calendar is well and truly underway. We can look forward to plenty of interesting Grade 1 and 2 contests throughout the weekend and the next fortnight also brings forth the tantalizing prospect of the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle.

It goes without saying that Long Run is going to be the new kid on the block that everybody's looking to beat. His brave performance in vanquishing the most storied jumpers on the circuit in Denman and Kauto Star was a joy to behold and truly served notice that a new generation is emerging – one not to be trifled with.

The six-year-old son of Cadoudal has been unraced since topping Denman by a full seven lengths at Cheltenham, but he's being well-backed for this contest and will likely see a very similar campaign to last year when he was sent out a mere three times.

Expect a run in this one, a stop off at Kempton for the King George VI on boxing day (or mid-January...) and then a defence of his crown in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham once again.

As it currently stands, punters will find Long Run priced in the range of 4/6 to 10/11 – virtually nobody is offering him up at over even money at this point. The competition set to challenge him could even include the likes of Kauto Star who remains in the running – what a story it would be for King Kauto to reemerge at the start of the season with a bold declaration that he still has something left to prove to himself.

Alas, much like Goldikova on the flat, it appears as though this living-legend has lost just a step. Kauto Star can be backed around 8/1.

Paddy Power have taken Diamond Harry down to 5/1 while all other bookmakers have him priced at 7/1. Weird Al has bene taken into 6s by Ladbrokes while the other bookmakers tend to have him listed in the 7/1 range. Time For Rupert can be backed anywhere from 15/2 up to 9/1.
