1,000 Guineas: horseracing betting latest
Looking out of the window, punters may not expect a beautiful day on Sunday when the 1,000 Guineas is run at Newmarket, but clerk of the course Michael Prosser was adamant on Tuesday that would be the situation this weekend. Click here for a free £25 to bet on the 1,000 Guineas with Betfair Rain has tumbled on the Rowley Mile ahead of this weekend's Classics, and that spells good news for backers of fillies' Classic favourite Natagora. The mount of Christophe Lemaire confirmed she had wintered well at Maisons-Laffitte three weeks ago when sluicing through heavy going in the Prix Imprudence, a Listed contest over 7f. Trainer Pascal Bary has high hopes for the filly, and he has every reason to, after his raids on Newmarket have yielded no fewer than four Group 1 victories in the last few years. He was unlucky with star filly Six Perfections in 2003 however, but apart from a nagging doubt that Natagora may not truly stay the mile trip, Bary has an outstanding chance to make up for his agonising 1,000 Guineas defeat five years ago. A French filly has not won the 1,000 Guineas since Hatoof scored in 1992, and the home defence is lead by John Gosden's Infallible, who took the Nell Gwyn, also at Newmarket, three weeks ago. Infallible was as big as 20/1 before her Nell Gwyn success and now vies for 1,000 Guineas favouritism with Natagora at around 4/1. It is a hell of a cut in price in just three weeks, but both of her career wins have been at HQ and the ease in going is also in her favour. Like Natagora however, she also has dubious staying qualities and it is telling that Ladbrokes, often so hot on these matters, is best-price about both fillies. Next in the betting is Muthabara, which has been described as "shaggy as a Shetland pony" by her trainer John Gosden, not something to encourage punters to back her, although Ladbrokes make her their market leader at 7/2. Muthabara is unlikely to come into herself in the next few days, but she should appreciate the mile trip, and there is no argument with the quality of her form. James Fanshawe's Specious, who is unbeaten in her two starts, could be interesting at Betfair's 7.4, but reportedly the Cheveley Park-owned filly prefers firmer going. One who catches the eye however, is Aidan O'Brien's Savethisdanceforme. O'Brien's horses have not been running at their best this season, but there were signs that the Ballydoyle stable was coming to hand at the weekend when Yeats and Duke of Marmelade scored at Longchamp, illustrating that when Group races are on offer, there is no better trainer to get a horse ready. Savethisdanceforme ran a creditable second in the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp last year, before winning a Listed event by nine lengths at the back end of the season. Last year, O'Brien sent out the multiple Group 1-winning filly Peeping Fawn several times before she got the message, and it could be the same with this one. Natagora is by far the most likely winner of this race, and the 4/1 is not too bad, but at a best-price of 14/1, Savethisdanceforme looks a worthy wager against the French raider and the rest.
