Ryanair Chase/Festival TrophyThe RSA Festival Trophy is a Grade 1 National Hunt chase reserved exclusively for five-year-old and above horses. The event is run over a distance of 2 miles 5 furlongs (4,225 metres) on the New Course at Cheltenham Racecourse. A total of 17 fences are jumped. A relative newcomer to the Cheltenham Festival line-up, the RSA Chase was first run in 2005 when the Festival was increased from a three-day to a four-day meeting. It replaced the old Cathcart chase which, despite being run the same distance, was reserved exclusively for novices and second-season steeplechasers.Ryanair has sponsored the Chase since 2006, having initially been sponsored by the Daily Telegraph. It was first run with Grade 1 status in 2008. To celebrate the 80th birthday of the Queen Mother, the event was renamed the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 1980 to support the continued support of the Festival by the Queen Mother. The overall layout of the race is a 2 miles stretch (3,219 metres) that features 12 different fences. The most recent winners include Gold Cup runner Voy Por Ustedes, piloted by Robert Thornton in 2007 and Master Minded ridden by Ruby Walsh in 2008. The race wasn't run 2001 due to the UK Foot and Mouth crisis. In the past ten years, a Paul Nicholls-trained horse has won the race 4 times out of 9.
