Wetherbys Champion BumperThe Champion Bumper is set to be one of the most anticipated races at the 2009 Cheltenham Festival. This Grade 1 National Hunt flat race is open to horses which are aged four to six-years-old. The race is listed at a length of 2 miles and 110 yards (3,319 metres) and is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham Racecourse.It was first run in 1992, and it is the most prestigious flat race, in National Hunt racing. The event has often featured horses which subsequently became leading hurdlers or chasers. Unlike most bumpers, professional jockeys are allowed to ride. It is run over a distance of 2 miles 1 furlong (3,420 metres) on the New Course at Cheltenham Racecourse and is one of the favourite jumps races at the Festival. A total of eight hurdles are jumped in the race. The Triumph Hurdle was originally run in 1939 at Hurst Park Racecourse, and was transferred to Cheltenham in 1965 following the closure of Hurst Park.
