2009 CHRISTMAS NUMBER ONE LAST MINUTE BETTING ODDS
We're down to the wire in the 2009 Christmas #1 voting and it looks like Rage Against the Machine have made a very strong case to win this thing as the odds are starting to shorten considerably on an “Any Other Artist” selection.
We've seen the odds fluctuating dramatically all week, and what originally looked like a small internet campaign really grew some legs with the story being publicized to all corners of the globe. Surely it speaks volumes to how broad the appeal really is for Rage Against the Machine's message of equality and anti-capitalism.
In the spirit of capitalism though, we're heading over to Betfair and getting in on the betting action before the window slams shut at midnight tonight.
There isn't much time left to get in there and lock in your bet on whether Rage Against the Machine's legions of fans will be able to pull this off in time. Plenty of pundits and observers expect a last hour rush on iTunes to purchase the song with many people who had previously been on the fence about doing anything now stepping up and making their voices heard in the final stages of this competition. Most bookmakers are petrified of offering betting on the outright winner of Christmas #1 this year, most are only offering markets on the “Christmas #1 W/O X-Factor Winner”.
Betfair, however is a dramatically different story where fans are betting against fans on the UK's #1 Christmas single. The odds on the X-Factor winner being named Top Christmas Single for 2009 are trading at around 1.4 or 1.43. Any Other Artist (namely RATM) are listed at 3.35! This is down more than a full point from the previous day and I expect to see the price trade lower as we get closer to midnight!
