2010 YORK EBOR DAY ONE BETTING TIPS AND SELECTIONS PART ONE
One of the top flat racing festivals world-wide is kicking off on Tuesday as the 2010 edition of the York Ebor is set to go. We've got some talented runners from all over the globe set to do battle here. We've got a few tricky handicaps to solve, as well as Group racing from all across the board.
The 1:45 at York is the Symphony Group Handicap, a class 2 affair going a relatively short 5f89y. The current betting favourite is Quest For Success (Noverre), but he's not scored since a 20-strong handicap at Donacaster last October. He has more acumen at this shorter distance than some of the others, but I just don't see the form there. He has also bounced from jockey to jockey all season without any success. I've got my eye on 16/1 Sir Gerry (Carson City) who kicked the season off at Meydan back in January. He ran in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes, finishing a disappointing 15th, but he'll be helped significantly by the drop in class here. I think this heavily-raced horse could be the outside selection in a field that's fairly wide-open. Top-weighted Barney McGrew is an interesting bet as well, having captured a Group 3 contest at Newcastle back in June.
At 2:15 we've got the Group 3 Sportingbet.com Acomb Stakes- a 7f dash for two year-olds. This is set to be a slugfest between some real up-and-comers and I was set to jump all over Godolphin's Biondetti (Bernardini), but he's listed as doubtful. Lake Ontario (Johannesburg) takes to the turf for AP O'Brien and he is fresh off a maiden score at Naas over a talented field of 16. It was a comfortable victory that day when he was sent off at 4/1. Waiter's Dream (Oasis Dream) looks the progressive sort and he's moving forward nicely, having just captured a maiden score at Newbury over a field of 17. Two year-old racing is all over the place sometimes, but I have a feeling that the best charges will win the day. The Long Game (Kyllachy) drops down from Group 3 company, but don't think this is his type of race. I'd steer clear.
The 2:50 sees the running of the Group 2 Sportingbet.com Great Voltigeur Stakes. We have some extremely talented three year-olds here and the pick seems to be Godolphin's Rewilding (Tiger Hill), who is listed at 2/1 by most major bookmakers. He retains Frankie Dettori for the mount and is still looking for his first Group-level score. He's got solid finishes in the Group 2 Prix Noailles at Longchamp, where he ran second, and the Epsom Derby where he acquitted himself well to finish third and he could have very well finished second that day. AP O'Brien is using this race as a seasonal debut for the talented Joshua Tree (Montjeu). He's been laid off since September and managed to capture the Group 2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot in his final race. He might need a race here to get back on form, but I think he's one of the bigger dangers. You can back Joshua Tree around 10/1.
