7-2 Winning favourite Backed at 999-1 on BetfairRising Shadow, winner of the 4.00 at Newcastle, was backed at a staggering 999-1 on Betfair in-running. There was £41 placed on the 7-2 favourite to win (£82 matched) when the horse looked to have lost all chance to justify favouritism. There had been strong support for Rising Shadow before the off but by mid race, when he was held up towards the rear and making no impression on the leaders, he looked to have lost all chance. It was at this point that punters on Betfair were able to back Rising Shadow at odds as high as 999-1. During the race Pieter Brueghel was matched at 1-10 and Ellens Academy at 1-5. However, Rising Shadow flew home in the closing stages to reward the big-priced backers. "For the favourite to have been backed at this price is simply incredible. From a small bet some lucky punters have won some rather substantial amounts!" said Betfair spokesperson Georgina Hard.
