All Signs Point to a Men's Singles Upset at Wimbledon
Such is the gap in quality between these two players and the rest of the tour, there is a temptation to dismiss the men's side of the sport as boring, and predictable. Every time a player beats either Federer or Nadal, the media works itself into a frenzy thinking that an individual has emerged to challenge the duopoly. Novak Djokovic looked as though he might break through and he has on occasion, winning the Australian Open after beating Federer in the semi-final. Having said that, question marks remain over his ability to consistently win slams and his tame exit against Marat Safin, whom Federer went on to demolish in straight sets, has only served to heighten these doubts. This year's Wimbledon has simply confirmed what we already knew: that Federer is practically unbeatable on grass, and that Nadal is his nearest challenger. What remains unpredictable though is who will win when these two titans of the sport lock horns. In the past Nadal has been considered a less effective player than Federer on grass. Last year he made progress on the surface by taking Federer to a five set final, no mean feat against a player who hardly ever drops a set on this surface. This season has been different though, his annihilation of Federer in the French Open led to doubts over Federer's position as world number one. Federer's performance at Wimbledon has allayed some of these uncertainties (he hasn't dropped a set en route to the final), but there is no doubt that Nadal is closing the gap, even on grass.Nadal's performance against Murray was exquisite, completely overpowering the Scot and undoubtedly playing his best tennis of the tournament so far. In fact, the Spaniard has improved with every match he has played in the tournament, and aside from a sloppy first set against Gulbis in the second round, can match Federer's record of having not dropped a set. Take the matador to reverse last year's result and beat the Swiss in five sets. Federer surely has to lose at Wimbledon one day, and Sunday might just be that day.Recommendation:Nadal to beat Federer 3-2 - 11/2
