Alonso sees finish line in sight
Fernando Alonso has sneaked ahead of McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the F1 betting for the Drivers' championship after the Spaniard won convincingly in Monza at the Italian Grand Prix. The reigning world champion now stands at 11/10 to regain his title with SportingBet as he cut Hamilton's world championship lead to just three points. It could have been worse for the Briton as he rejoined the race in third after a pit stop with just 12 laps to go but he overtook Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen a lap later to secure second. Raikkonen's Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa is effectively out of the title battle after retiring after just nine laps. The Brazilian is 23 points off the lead with a maximum of 40 still available. Alonso led from the start, and appeared comfortable throughout. "All the wins are special but Monza is one of the circuits where I have never won before and I wanted to achieve that to try to make at least one win in all the circuits," Alonso said. Betting on the market could well be thrown into disarray this week as on Thursday a hearing takes place into the 'spy scandal' that has engulfed the sport, and McLaren could yet be hit with a points deduction, or even banned from the championship.
