We are just a few hours away from this massive fight, with Britain's Amir Khan taking on Ukrainian-born American fighter Dmitriy Salita. Salita is undefeated in 31 fights with only 1 draw marring his perfect record. He's never met anybody of Khan's caliber though and I think that will be quite apparent early on.
It goes without saying that this bout carries racial and religious implications as this is the first time in recent history that a Muslim has fought a Jewish fighter (an orthodox Jewish fighter, as well) for a title belt.
Anybody backing Salita is getting tremendous odds as he looks set to lose his undefeated record against the superior Bolton-based fighter. William Hill has shortened Khan's outright odds to a mere 1/7. You won't find better value than that elsewhere, as he is the massive across-the-board favourite for this fixture. Salita trades at 4/1 while the draw pays 25/1.
This fight is not expected to go the distance, but if it does, you'll be looking at a 5/4 payout while any victory aside from a decision would garner a 4/7 payout. Khan is 4/6 to win via KO or TKO while he is 13/8 to win a decision. Salita is a masive 15/2 to knock out Khan and a lengthy 14/1 for a points victory. The thing is, for me, that if Salita gets all the way and goes the distance he will need to have fought a stellar fight. That 14/1 could be a little insurance if things don't go Khan's way. I don't think he's going to get Breidis Prescotted again, but if Salita is still standing after 12 rounds, he will have fought an excellent fight.
The over/under on the rounds is set at 9.5 with over listed at evens and under at 8/11. Not bad odds all around and I don't see this fight going 10 rounds. Amir Khan is listed at a slim 12/1 to get a victory in rounds 3-8, while he is listed at 14/1 for a 2nd round win. He trades at 16/1 in round 9 while he is also 20/1 in round 10 and 22/1 in round 11. He rises to 25/1 for a Pacquiao-style last round KO or TKO.
Salita is listed at 40/1 for rounds 1-4 while he is 50/1 for round 5. Rounds 6-10 are a massive 66/1 and he rises to 80/1 for a round 11 or 12 victory.
This is going to be a Khan show, and while Salita is a competent boxer with a great record, I genuinely think this is too big a step up too quickly. Khan by KO or TKO in round 6 sounds about right to me. It could actually be earlier than that.
