ANTONIO VALENCIA OUT FOR SEASON WITH INJURY
Antonio Valencia could be out for the rest of the season after suffering a serious ankle injury in last night’s Champions League tie against Rangers. Valencia appeared to get his foot stuck in the Old Trafford turf before going to ground with what looked like a horrific injury. Following a five minute delay the Ecuadorian was then stretchered off with a gas mask and Sir Alex Ferguson later revealed that the winger could be out for the season.
Ferguson made 10 changes to the side that drew with Everton at the weekend but they couldn’t break down a stubborn and well organised Rangers defence and the game ended goalless. That result coupled with Valencia’s 4-0 win over Bursaspor means that United’s odds on topping Group C have lengthened from 1/4 to 1/2 with SkyBet.
In golf, Lee Westwood has moved to dispel fears that he may not recover sufficiently from injury in time to play in next month’s Ryder Cup. The world number three told the Golf Channel: "I haven't had any pain for three weeks. I've made great progress. I'm pretty strong at the moment. I'd be fine playing in all five matches (in the Ryder Cup)."
Westwood can be backed at 8/1 with Ladbrokes to be the European team’s top points scorer. Rory McIlroy is favourite at odds of 4/1 with Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter and Luke Donald sharing second favouritism at 6/1.
And finally, as the County Championship draws to a close in England it looks as though Somerset are on course to win their first ever County Championship title. Captain Marcus Trescothick provided the platform for his side to post a commanding first innings lead over Durham and they can currently be backed at odds of 1.5 on Betfair to pip Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire to the title.
