ATP CINCINNATI QUARTERS MURRAY vs. FISH
Andy Murray reaches a second successive Masters quarterfinal in as many weeks with a hard fought win over Ernests Gulbis. Standing in his way of a spot in the Cincinnati Masters semi is American Mardy Fish.
Murray is listed as the favourite at 4/7 to win outright but Fish is a mere 5/4 underdog at William Hill.
Murray hasn’t had an easy time of advancing in Cincinnati at all, and yesterday, he faced his sternest test. Gulbis really took it to him and during the match, showed up Murray at times.
That Murray averted nigh-defeat is a positive sign. It was a good match for Murray to win because he will gain confidence from it. And he needs all he can get because Fish has been a tough opponent for Murray in the past.
Murray and Fish are level lifetime 3-3; however, Fish has the positive trend over the world No.4 having beaten him twice this season.
Fish beat Murray in Miami 6-4, 6-4 and soon afterwards he tossed Murray in London Queen’s Club, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(2).
Fish has been one of the hottest players this summer, playing to an 11-1 mark and picking up two titles spanning two different surfaces – grass and hard.
Fish has beaten some noteworthy players this year aside from Murray he has wins over compatriots Roddick and Isner.
The markets are compelling where this matchup is concerned. Fish is trading at 16/5 to win in straight sets and 7/2 to win in three sets. This would be an upset if Fish pulled off the win – despite the fact that he’s done this before and he’ll be the crowd’s favourite.
Murray to win in straight sets is listed at 6/4 while a three set win is offered at 13/5.
This should be an intriguing match and a great start to the day’s card. Murray is expected to advance because he just won the Rogers Cup last week, signalling his intent for the US Open. Fish looms dangerous though and a win by him wouldn’t be a shocker.
