ATP MASTERS ROME: FERRER DUMPS MURRAY, TSONGA NEXT
David Ferrer is after dumping Andy Murray in the Rome Masters last 16. He has his sight set on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and a spot in the semis. William Hill bookmakers tip Ferrer as the favourite at 2/5 and Tsonga the mere puppy at 7/4. Will Ferrer come through on his favourable odds and confirm his place in the final four, or will Tsonga deliver the upset.
William Hill has released over 21 separate betting markets on this eye-catching clash between Ferrer, the Spanish clay-court guru, and Tsonga, the all-surface Frenchman.
Interestingly, this will be the first-ever clash between the pair at an ATP level event. In the absence of a head-to-head measure, handicapping becomes a bit of a free-for-all.
What we are left with is trends. Tsonga is 2-1 against Spanish clay-court gurus since the European clay-court swing kicked off. He beat Almagro twice (Monte Carlo and Barcelona) but lost to Juan Carlos Ferrero (Monty). Overall, he has totted a 3-2 mark on clay in his last two events.
Ferrer has a title on the season from his stint in the South American clay court swing. He is after back-to-back semis in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, giving him a 7-2 mark during the European clay court swing. He went 9-1 in the South American swing, with a runner-up finish in Buenos Aires and a title victory in Acapulco.
All things considered Ferrer would appear to be the better play on the outright win. That said, Tsonga is a top ten player. A win by him wouldn’t be surprising.
Peripheral markets on offer in this match include set betting, games betting and so forth.
Ferrer to win in straight sets is trading at 11/10 and to win in three sets at 13/5. Tsonga is priced 4/1 and 9/2, respectively.
Betting on the number of sets irrespective of the winner is offered at 1/2 for two sets and 11/8 for three sets.
