ATP US OPEN 2010 BETTING ISNER VS.YOUZHNY
John Isner will face Mikhail Youzhny on Arthur Ashe Stadium tonight to decide a spot in the last 16.
Isner is aiming to book a spot in the fourth round and become the third American to reach the second week of the US Open, alongside Mardy Fish and Sam Querrey.
Three Americans into the second week of the US Open would indeed improve the chances of a home grown champion emerging on Sunday.
To date, John Isner’s best deposit at any Grand Slam is a R16 appearance. The American has reached the fourth round twice in his career – at the 2009 US Open and 2010 Australian Open.
The former was the more meaningful account because not only was it the first time he reached the second week at a major but he also upset Andy Roddick in making the career breakthrough.
Isner is going to be the huge crowd favourite tonight, obviously. However, he isn’t the bookies favourite. Youzhny is.
Youzhny goes into the R32 clash as the favourite – albeit a marginal favourite tipped at 8/13 at William Hill.
Youzhny also has the edge in set betting markets. The Russian is priced best to win in straight sets at 10/3. A four or five set win by Youzhny is listed at 11/4 and 4/1, respectively.
Isner is at the disadvantage, listed at 6/5, going into this match for several reasons. Youzhny a) ranks higher than Isner b) has the 1-0 head-to-head edge over the American and c) is on slightly better form going into the US Open.
In terms of form, Isner is a bit of a question mark because of an ankle injury he suffered in Cincinnati.
He’s looked good in the first few rounds and insists his ankle is fine, but because he was forced to stay off his feet for a week or two (didn’t train or pick up a racquet during this time), whether his body will hold up to the grind of major tennis is another matter entirely.
Mentally, however, Isner is without a doubt a tough cookie. There is nobody that would take him to task there after surviving that Wimbledon epic against Mahut. This makes him a tough opponent to beat whether on (or off) form.
Isner to win in straight sets is rather large, listed at 6/1. To win in four or five sets is priced the same, at 9/2.
