ATP US OPEN BETTING PREVIEW WAWRINKA VS YOUZHNY
Stanislas Wawrinka and Mikhail Youzhny will face off in the US Open quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon. A spot in the US Open semis is on the line and potentially, a clash with Rafael Nadal, presuming the World No.1 takes care of business later tonight when he takes on Fernando Verdasco.
This was supposed to be the Murray vs. Berdych clash, or so pundits expected as all and sundry had those two heavyweights slotted for a compelling clash in the quarters. Llodra was the first to spoil that party when he dumped Berdych in the opening round. Yours truly, the gate crashing Wawrinka, upset Murray in the third round to complete the coup d'état.
Now we have before us an unexpected quarterfinal matchup but no less compelling because of it. Wawrinka and Youzhny are perhaps the best-matched quarterfinalists of the bunch, stacking up rather evenly that each would appear to have an equal shot to advance into the semis.
Case-and point: is a levelheaded series at two apiece. A quick glance at these raw stats however confirms Youzhny has a slim edge over Wawrinka having won both hard court encounters, including one this season at the Miami Masters. Wawrinka, on the other hand, has dominated Youzhny on clay.
In fact, the markets are oscillating between this pair with some splitting hairs while others aren’t. At Paddy Power, Wawrinka is at Even money while Youzhny just edges ahead at 4/5. William Hill bookmakers meanwhile tip them equally at 5/6.
While these numbers might indicate a slim edge to Youzhny, it’s negated by the form Wawrinka has shown during his run at the US Open and nowhere more so than in his back-to-back victories over Andy Murray and Sam Querrey. Isn’t Murray considered one of the best hard courters in the game today and if so, shouldn’t some of that pre-eminence transfer over to his vanquisher.
Judging Wawrinka on these last two accounts, he’d appear to be the more threatening of the two and I dare say, in pole position to advance.
