ATP US OPEN BETTING TIPS FISH VS DJOKOVIC
The R16 clash between American hopeful Mardy Fish and ATP Premium player Novak Djokovic is perhaps one of the most anticipated clashes on the day’s card at the US Open.
Fish, who’s in the midst of a standout summer, and, arguably, playing the best tennis of his career, looms large and many are floating the idea that he might mastermind the second biggest upset of the tournament, after Wawrinka’s upset win over Andy Murray, naturally.
Paddy Power lists Fish as the puppy at 11/5 while Djokovic, understandably, is tipped the favourite at 1/3.
Fish has never beaten Djokovic. In four career meetings with the Serbian starlet, Fish has failed each time. Conspicuously, he’s even failed to account well in these matches, winning only three of 13 sets played.
Of course, Fish is a new man now. And don’t we know it. He’s a reinvented player, completely made over by a rigorous fitness regime that’s seen him shed over 30 pounds and improve his overall stamina and form. Most noticeably, he’s playing with a consistency hereto unknown by him.
His summer results are proof-positive of this change in his DNA. He picked up two titles – Newport and Atlanta, and finished runner-up at Queen’s Club and Cincinnati.
His summer hard court deposit – playing to a 10-3 mark – saw him finish third in the US Open Series, behind Andy Murray and Roger Federer.
If you are a convert, a newfangled Fish fan, backing him to beat Djokovic is a tempting bet. You have to believe that the new-and-improved Fish will have the confidence to beat him.
Don’t forget, Fish is the home favourite and therefore the crowd at Arthur Ashe will be wholeheartedly behind him. That is a significant edge.
Of course, premium players should beat the Fish’s of this world. I mean if the World No.3 hopes to win another major in his career this is precisely the sort of match that he should come out on top in.
True, the conditions will be hard – the heat is no friend to Djokovic. And the crowd will be against him, boo hoo hoo.
Yet, we expect the top players to overcome such obstacles and find a way to win. Is Djokovic that sort of top player though?
