ATP US OPEN BETTING TIPS NADAL VS. SIMON IN THE THIRD ROUND
Rafael Nadal and Gilles Simon close the afternoon session at Arthur Ashe stadium when they get their bid for a spot in the US Open last 16 underway.
Nadal, who is chasing the illusive US Open crown, enters this clash as the solid favourite to advance. Popular British bookmaker, William Hill has Nadal priced as the 1/12 favourite.
As the favourite to advance, Nadal dominates each and every performance market at William Hill.
He is the hot favourite to win in straight sets, listed at 8/15. A 3-1 score to Nadal is listed at 3/1 while a 3-2 score to Nadal is priced a whopping 8/1.
The odds are stacked against Simon. That he’s struggled this season is no secret and because of these struggles, and rather questionable form, he is a hefty puppy at 6/1.
Of course, Simon was once a top ten player and as such, he can’t be written off entirely. He even has a win over Nadal when the Spaniard was ranked the world No.1 player.
Simon beat Nadal at the 2008 Madrid Masters when the tournament was still played on hard courts. Simon took out Nadal in the semis coming back from a set down 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(5).
Today’s match however should be different because this is a Grand Slam and Nadal typically plays his best at this level.
The last time Nadal didn’t reach the R16 of any Grand Slam was five years ago; ironically, this happened at the US Open when he lost to James Blake in the R32.
Nadal has two tough matches behind him over in-from players in Teymuraz Gabashvili and Denis Istomin, so he should be ready for anything Simon brings.
Crucially, he didn’t drop a set to either player and if memory serves me correctly, he wasn’t even been broken on serve in either match.
Given Nadal’s rather impressive form after two rounds of play, it really isn’t surprising that Simon is listed large in set betting markets.
Simon is tipped at a staggering 33/1 to win in straight sets. He’s not served much better to win at 3-1 or 3-2, listed at 16/1 and 12/1, respectively.
Bookmakers expect a straightforward affair it seems as three sets in the match irrespective of the winner is best priced at 4/9. A four set or five set affair, irrespective of the winner, is trading large at 12/5 and 6/1, respectively.
