August Premiership betting - who will be ahead of the pack?
Blue Square offer the chance to bet on which Premiership team will be leading at the end of August, and who will be the top scorer at the end of the same period. My immediate reaction was the 16/1 for Liverpool should be snapped up.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> The reason for this was their early start to the season having been entered into the first qualifying round of the Champions League. However, on further inspection this would not be a prudent decision. A postponed match in August is Liverpool v Arsenal due to the European Champions involvement in the Super Cup. It means that instead of playing four league matches, Liverpool and Arsenal only play three and this of course greatly reduces their chances. Also playing a game less than most are Man U, who must play a Champions League qualifying fixture in August. The 11/2 on offer for United should be left alone, and especially so when their first match away at fellow Champions League qualifiers Everton is taken into account. Of the top four teams remaining, it leaves only Chelsea with a full quote of four games. Unfortunately the 13/8 is arguably too short to bother with. What is though far more tempting is the 15/2 on Didier Drogba to top the goalscoring charts by the end of August. If Chelsea as expected do make a fast start in the first month, there is good chance the majority of their goals will come from their Ivory Coast striker. It is not uncommon in the Premiership for foreign imports to struggle in their first season, only to set the league alight in their second campaign as they become more accustomed to the pace of the English game. Matches away at Wigan, home to Arsenal and West Brom, followed by Spurs away should offer ample opportunity to score sufficient goals to be leading the goalscoring charts by the end of August.
