Bangladesh destroy Australia

Bangladesh produced one of the biggest sporting upsets of all time when beating Australia in their one-day international in Cardiff at the weekend - and some Betfair punters secured massive odds of 169-1 about them. For a side that some suggested should be ousted from the international circuit after being summarily dismissed by England earlier in the summer, it was no surprise to witness that the pre-match betting on Betfair saw the Aussies at 1-100 and Bangladesh available at 100-1 on the leading betting exchange. And, even though they restricted the Australians to a modest total of 250, Bangladesh drifted out to 169-1 after reaching a stuttering 72-3 in their reply. Betfair punters were falling over themselves to back the Aussies at 1-100 at this stage. But, thanks to a wonderful century by Mohammad Ashraful, they unthinkably assumed favouritism just before the fourth wicket fell. They then held their nerve to secure one of the biggest sporting shocks of all time."There have been major betting and sporting surprises before, notably USA beating England in the 1950 Football World Cup, " said Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin. "But this came in a two-runner race and it must rank as a far, far bigger turn-up than the likes of Buster Douglas beating the then seemingly invincible Mike Tyson."Ashraful was the match-winner and I suppose those Bangladesh punters have him to thank for making them full of cash!."England then kept up the heat on Australia with another one-day win in Bristol - and they came from an unlikely position to post the victory.Chasing a target of 252, England were struggling badly at 160-6 in reply, needing 93 runs off only 74 balls with four wickets remaining. Australia were matched at a low of 1.14, and England at a high of 7.4But up stepped Kevin Pietersen to crack 91 runs off only 65 balls to smash England to victoryAustralia are now out 1.62 to win the Ashes on Betfair, having been backed at a low of 1.41.
