Baseball: One Coach Down, Several More to come!
Actually the good folks here atSportingbetUSA could have offered one hell of a proposition wager, had they asked who would be the first major league baseball team, to get rid of their manager. With so many teams underachieving, it would be a wide open race, but Mr. Tony Pena of the Kansas City Royals has finally seen the writing on the wall and bolted to the door, before being place in front of the firing squad.Pena just last weekend was given the dreaded vote of confidence by Royals management, which when you receive it, you had might as well pack your bags, because it is just a matter of time, before the ax comes down. The Royals are a pathetic 8-25 and what do you expect from a team that spends only $36 million dollars on their payroll. Not that money is the answer to every struggling team's woes, as one only has to look at the Yankees and their $208 million mistake, to realize that it is not entirely all about money. The Colorado Rockies have been outscored 87-35 in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings including 22-0 at home in the 7th inning. They are also an embarrassing 2-15 away from Coors Field and 2-8 in their past 10.The Philadelphia Phillies are the worst hitting team in the National League and that is with a payroll of $96 million and they have a starting pitcher with an ERA of 10.57.Cincinnati in another enigma as they have Ken Griffey and a host of what are considered good hitters, yet are 12-20, 3-11 on the road and also mired in a 2-8 slump the past 10 games. Jr. has only 3 homeruns and 15 RBI's in 108 at bats which is one homerun every 36 at bats, which would translate to 15 homerun season.19 homeruns and 125 RI's would be considered a solid season for Bret Boone if he went to the plate 550 times in the season, well the entire Seattle roster has those totals, yet they have been to the plate 1107 times! Speaking of Boone he has 3 homeruns and 17 RBI's and is just behind $60 million man Adrian Beltre's 19 RBI's.But what would an article about troubled coaches and teams be if we did not mention Joe Torre's name. $17,142,837 is what Mr. Steinbrenner is paying juiceless Jason Giambi for his 3 homerun and 6 RBI contributions to date with the Yankees. Let us not forget the $16 million to Kevin Brown for his 1-4 mark and 6.39 ERA to date.Boy these owners are bad businessmen when it comes to baseball!
