Cambridgeshire throws up each-way value

Punters have got to get a sense of perspective when betting on the Cambridgeshire. There are 35 horses running at a furious pace down the Newmarket track. It's a fiendishly difficult race to find the winner of. Think the Gordion knot, Rubik's Cube and then add Fermat's Theorem into the mix. If you don't believe me, you've only got to look at the 2004 renewal when Spanish Don won at 100/1. He remains the only horse to defy a single-figure draw in the last ten years, and since following up 27 days after that success, he has yet to enter the winner's enclosure. So what kind of animal do you need to win it? Well generally, you require a horse which can stay the difficult distance of a mile and a furlong. That probably rules out leading fancy Docofthebay who looks to only just stay a mile. The other glaring stat to have on your side, is that the winner generally finishes in the frame on their previous start. You can therefore strike out the likes of top-weight Pinpoint and Snoqualmie Boy. The two that interest me though are drawn on different sides of the track, which is always a good approach. There are only three horses on the planet that have been good enough to finish ahead of Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe favourite Authorized. One of them is Teslin, who races off a mark of 8/11. Teslin lost his way earlier in the season, but having been gelded, he has blossomed on the race track. He won a decent contest at Beverley in August from Monte Alto, who also lines up today, before emphasising his claims in no uncertain terms at this course two weeks ago. Although there were only six runners in that event, it was a competitive contest and Teslin can continue his improvement for shrewd trainer Brian Ellison. The other fancy is Greek Well. Sir Michael Stoute's four year-old was a one-time favourite for the Derby, but like many of his relatives, the son of Sadler's Wells has taken some time to come to hand. All of a sudden though, he has won three from six and in this kind of form he could take some stopping. Verdict: 1pt E/W Teslin @ 12/1 (Paddy Power, Blue Square); 1pt E/W Greek Well @ 16/1 (Betfred)
