Cameron to get early push?
The odds on David Cameron being the first party leader to leave his post have been slashed following a poll suggesting the Conservatives are facing a landslide defeat if a snap election is called. Gordon Brown is now said to have 24 point advantage over the Tory chief when voters were asked who would make the best Prime Minister. Liberal Democrats Sir Menzies Campbell remains the 2/5 favourite with Ladbrokes to be ousted first, but Cameron is now in from 5/2 to 7/4 with Brown out to 14/1 from 12/1. The Harrow-based firm have also trimmed Labour to 1/2 from 4/6 to win the most seats at the next election and pushed out the Tories to 6/4 from 11/8. Spokesman Robin Hutchison said: "If you'd have asked the bookies about an election a few months ago we all had the Tories as odds on favourites and were expecting Cameron to clean up when Blair left. "But it's now beginning to look like he ought to have stayed in Brittany. As far as the betting is concerned Brown has more bounce than a space hopper." Punters are however going off the idea of an early election. Talk over the summer hinted that Brown could go to the country early to take advantage of his popularity. But the likelihood of him doing so is now fading amid suggestions Labour are under pressure in the key marginal seats. And Ladbrokes have reacted by drifting 2007 as the preferred date from 2/1 to 7/2, with 2008 now 7/4 from 2/1 and 2010 slashed from 12/1 to 4/1. Hutchison said: "All the money we took over night and during the first few hours of trading is for 2009 and, in particular, 2010. We have laid the latter to lose up to £10,000 in the space of 24 hours. "Punters are no longer interested in an early election before the end of this year and very few think it will even be next year."
