With FC Barcelona being considered one of the top contenders to secure another Champions League Trophy, it’s probably not a big surprise that Lionel Messi is widely considered to be the outright favourite to win the Golden Boot inside of Europe’s top football competition.

There is a lot to like about his ability and the living legend from Argentina has a lot of momentum coming into the competition. Being at the epicenter of his team and widely-considered to be one of the top selections to go all the way, Messi is trading as the outright favourite ahead of his main rival Cristiano Ronaldo who is in Italy with Juventus. 

The bookmakers have Messi priced around a 5/1 margin and that’s not a bad price at all with a few goals in the group stages against weaker opponents likely to give him an edge as the tournament continues to unfold. There is a lot to like about his ability and he tends to take both free kicks and penalties so that definitely gives the punters an extra edge. 

Cristiano Ronaldo is closing in on Messi and is just a point back with a 6/1 price tag to be named as top Champions League goalscorer. In order to get into genuine contention a player needs to at least get their side into the semi-finals and Juventus look more than capable of doing that. 

It will be interesting to see how the addition of Romelu Lukaku from Manchester United is going to affect that as he could turn out to be the new focal point for the goals at the Italian side.
