Champions League results cost British bookies a whopping £10 million.
A staggering 14 favourites in the 16 fixtures won their matches including British sides Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Celtic.Thousands of accumulator bets in which backers select more than one team also came in, including one at Ladbrokes for nearly £115,000, thanks to the fact there were no draws. The odds of all 16 Champions League games ending with a positive result for one or other team over the two days worked out at 250/1.And it proved to be disastrous news for the battered bookies who recorded their worst ever results in the competition.Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison said: "In the last 48 hours the punters have been the champs and the bookies have been made to look like chumps!""It's cost us alone £2million and you can times that by five for the rest of the industry. It's the worst 48 hours so far this season by a country mile - in fact it's probably our worst ever set of football results.Britain's layers bore the brunt on Tuesday night when seven favourites - Anderlecht, Celtic, Lyon, Lille, Manchester United, Porto and Real Madrid - won their matches, with only Arsenal letting customers down.On Wednesday, Liverpool, Chelsea , Inter Milan, AS Roma, Bayern Munich and Valencia and Werder Bremen repeated the trick with only PSV Eindhoven saving the bookies' blushes.Punters that backed all 14 favourites that won would have been offered combined odds of 4959/1One Ladbrokes internet customer from Basingstoke, Hampshire backed all eight winning teams on Wednesday at odds of 136/1.Using a number of different accumulator bets and he staked £2,800 to return a total of £114,464.52.Accumulator bets involve punters grouping a number of matches and selecting which teams will win or draw. The odds of the teams in their individual matches are then multiplied, giving a greater return on the money staked.Hutchison added: "Bookies always rely on a few draws to knock out the accumulators. Most people go for the teams to win rather than a draw so it can be a disaster for us if they all come up trumps."The only good news for the bookies was Arsenal's defeat in Moscow and ironically Chelsea's win over Barcelona, as the Spaniards were heavily backed prior to kick off and in play during the game."PSV Eindhoven were not favourites to win their game - but they were still well backed.""If it goes on like this we'll be having bread and water this Christmas!"
