Chelsea vs Manchester United Preview

It seems a long time ago when a Manchester United pummeled Chelsea 4-0 on the opening day and Frank Lampard’s men will no doubt work to avenge that result at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

 That game appeared to be a one-off considering the varying forms of the respective clubs but Monday is the time for both sides to make a serious statement of intent.

United have been a picture of inconsistency all season but victory on Monday would position them within three points of Chelsea and add serious weight to their argument for the top four.

United have traditionally been good against their fellow top 6 rivals and victories over Chelsea this season across two competitions will boost the side greatly.

Chelsea have registered only one win in their last four fixtures, drawing their last two while the Red Devils have lost two of their last three and have failed to score since January 11th and have no away goals for 2020.

Manchester United though, has the added advantage that they are unbeaten against Chelsea in their last five games scoring 11 times and eliminating them from two different cup competitions.

Both teams still have long terms injury absentees but focus should be on those available.Spanish goalkeepers occupy the goals on both sides and their form has been worrying for their club mates and possibly for their Spanish colleagues. David De Gea has shone in more rare patches while Kepa seems to be struggling for confidence recently.

That will be an area which could turn the game. The goalkeeper who has the better night may not keep a clean sheet but will end up taking something from the game. The Blues’ home form has been much unlike them with five wins from 12 home games and a paltry 16 goals.

Manchester United has a few new faces in their ranks that could make an impact in London. Odion Ighalo should feature along with midfield dynamo Bruno Fernandes and looks more likely to raise their game for a contest of this magnitude, but a clinical performance in front of goal will be needed by both sides in a game where few chances can be expected.
