England vs. Montenegro: Euro 2012 Match Preview
- By Adam Currie on October 13, 2010 02:16 GMTEngland head out in a few minutes time looking to underline their intentions to dominate Group G in their run up to Euro 2012.
The Three Lions are up against high-flying minnows Montenegro, who they themselves, are riding a wave of recent success, including a 1-0 win over Switzerland a few weeks ago.
England head into this clash riddled by injury- with reliable trio Frank Lampard, Phil Jagielka and Jermaine Defoe all absent. However, on a positive note Rio Ferdinand returns to take the captain’s armband
All eyes are on Wayne Rooney with the former glory boy of English football battling both the media as well as personal issues, in his fight to once again capture form.
Fabio Capello has also limited his options up front here tonight with the surprising recall of Kevin Davies- a complete reversal on his usual trend of bringing through young talent.
England will look to build upon an impressive campaign thus far- including dominant wins over Bulgaria, as well as Switzerland. With that said, minnows Montenegro have been the surprise of the group so far and have yet to concede a goal in any of their three matches so far.
While this points to a side on the rise, tonight will prove to be a massive challenge for the newcomers as they attempt to cope with a class side, who play a higher level of football, than that of their group predecessors.
Breaking down Montenegro’s defence could prove to be tough here tonight; however England should have enough quality in the attacking areas to see off the threat of their lesser opponents.
